Reacting to Losses

As a Barcelona fan, we are used to beautiful football being played under Manager Pep Guardiola. This season, even when compared to previous Championship Barcelona clubs, FCB is being heralded as one of the best all-time. The Catalans are on pace to record 100 points, a first ever feat in La Liga history. So you can understand that when Barcelona loses, it is headline front page news.

Today, Barcelona lost 0-1 to arch-rival Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) Final. The goal was nicely executed, as much as it PAINS me to say it. A nice 1,2 combo between Di Maria and Marcelo that resulted in a perfect Di Maria cross right to Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished with a header past back-up goalkeeper Pinto. Any true Barcelona fan, if they could choose any Real Madrid player to score against them, the last player they would pick would be Ronaldo. It was like getting punched in the stomach, only adding iron knuckles, that it was Cristiano that scored the game winner. There was absolutely nothing Pinto could've done to save it. The matched ended soon after and Barca fans from all over the world, while Madrid celebrated and hoisted the Spanish Cup, were wondering "how could we lose? ..is something wrong? ..should they play differently now?"

Tonight just wasn't Barcelona's night to win. Losing happens and no one is perfect. As fans, we tend to overreact when our club (especially one that is expected to win every match) loses. With the club still in 1st place in La Liga and only few weeks remaining, as well as favorites to win UEFA's Champions League, let's not forget how Barcelona have become one of the most skilled, respected and enjoyable teams to ever watch. All year, they have played brilliantly against all opponents, even Real Madrid earlier in November (won 5-0), so there's no reason to get distraught over 1 loss.

I have complete belief that Barcelona will win the next time they face Real Madrid, sticking to their philosophy that has made them dominant this 2010-2011 season.
